11 years ago today, I married the love of my life.
I knew the moment we met I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. She was so driven, independent, intelligent, and of course beautiful.
The early years of our marriage have been fantastic. But battling obesity, I was often cranky. She would always understand and roll with the mood swings. Not many people would have.
Since I've maintained this blog, I've reflected upon many reasons why I made drastic changes to improve my health. I wanted to be more active. I wanted to be a better son. I wanted to be a better father.
But most importantly, I wanted to be a better husband. Being fat was eroding my health and degrading my mental well-being. I couldn't go or do. My wife supported me all these years and it tormented me that because I was too fat, I couldn't return the favor. Even standing and watching her complete significant milestones in her life, such as her first 5k, was almost too physically demanding.
She deserved more.
There is a great quote by Jack Nicholson in the movie "As Good As It Gets." As his "date" threatens to walk out on him during dinner, Nicholson is forced to quickly deliver a compliment. His saving words? "You make me want to be a better man."
By being such a great wife and a wonderful person, my wife has made me want to be a better man, and a better husband.
When looking for a sterling example of self-determination while going through the sucky parts of this process, I only needed to look beside me. I married one of the most determined people I've ever known. When a goal is set, she is undeterred until it is realized. That spirit has been infectious the last two years, and honestly one of the primary reasons for my success to date.
I am so grateful I met my soul-mate. I cherish each day with her.
If only the rest of the world knew the love I know...
Happy Anniversary Jennifer!
Love Is - Nikki Giovanni
Some people forget that love is
tucking you in and kissing you “Good night”
no matter how young or old you are
Some people don’t remember that love is
listening and laughing and asking questions
no matter what your age
Few recognize that love is
commitment responsibility no fun at all
unless
Love is
You and me
This is the scene from As Good As It Gets.
